I created this case study in 2014 as a way to explore new design challenges that I was not receiving at my day job. I chose this project because of my love for sharks and Ocearch's mission resonates with me.

Gaia's layout was bound to the infamous "hamburger dungeon." Unfortunately, this architecture does not support intuitive context-switching between map and folder content.

The original home screen felt like it would be better suited in a “more” tab. I used this opportunity to create a live feed of shark information enabling the user to see what's happening with all the sharks and get a better sense of what the app does.

With the media tab I stripped out superfluous details and let the photos do the talking. For the more tab I combined the settings, brought in the content from the original home page, and placed a CTA at the top to help entice people to donate.

This has been one of the most rewarding projects I have worked on. It has opened so many doors for me and for that I am grateful. It's because of this project I was able to get my foot in the door at Google. I've also been in contact with the wonderful people at Ocearch on multiple occasions discussing the design and where they are headed with their own designs. It makes all the hard work more than worth it. :)
