There was once a time where I didn't design very many icons and I didn't illustrate much. This project set out to change that.

Over the course of a couple years I would sit down, sketch out, and illustrate a comprehensive set of icons. I ended up picking themes for each set and would release the set to the public for free in return for some social sharing. The goal here was to develop a skill and give back to the design community.

Looking through my sketchbooks I realized I tend to draw a lot of nautical themed images. There was definitely enough there to fill in some gaps and create the first set. Once I published the set it was picked up by Smashing Magazine and I got a huge influx of visitors to my site. After all the great exposure I was hooked and knew I had to continue.

During the time this set was created, weather icons were pretty popular. I believe this was when the first minimal weather apps and icons were coming out. Not wanting to miss the boat, I decided I would create my own weather set. But I wanted to make more icons for this set so I decided to come up with three styles of clouds so the user could choose the level of complexity they wanted in their clouds.

Looking back at everything I had done before felt like it was a little too common, so this time I wanted to do something a little niche. I decided to go with the theme of Science because of how vast it is and because I love science. Win win.
